the book All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, comradeship is
necessary to Paul and his friends. Comradeship is vital throughout the war
because they can trust each other. Comradeship plays an enormous role in the
war because of how they can comfort one another. Paul and his friends had known
each other for a long time and care for each other. With comradeship they can
keep each other’s mind off the war and be able to create laughter. Comradeship
is useful to them because they are all going through the same thing and are
suffering from the war. As more and more soldiers die they can use comradeship
to stay strong together as a bunch. Another positive is they know each other’s
weakness and strength so well that they can use the strengths when needed. Paul
can also rely and depend on his friends when he is down. Paul’s friends provide
him the comfort required to continue throughout the war. Comradeship can help
them survive the war in the long run.
example in the book of Paul knowing his comrades is when he said, “I know their
every step and movement; I would recognize them at any distance.” This shows
that Paul knows them well and may relate to them. This also can help them in
the war when they are in trouble and need to find each other. Another example is
“Kropp divides a cigarette and hands me half. Tjaden gives an account of his
national dish–broad-beans and bacon. He despises it when not flavoured with
bog-myrtle, and, “for God’s sake, let it all be cooked together.. full of horse-flesh
in his hand.” This shows how they are sharing with each other which is very useful.
This can help them later in the war when they need each other’s help. When
someone needs something, they can ask each other for stuff to assist them out.
Another example was in chapter four when Paul was helping the recruit that was afraid
by cuddling him closer because of the bombs that was going off. Paul was also
comforting the recruits that feared the war and told the recruits that they’ll
get used to it.
example of Paul’s friend helping him was when he said, “I am no longer a
shuddering speck of existence, alone in the darkness; –I belong to them and
they to me; we all share the same fear and the same life, we are nearer than
lovers, in a simpler, a harder way; I could bury my face in them, in these
voices, these words that have saved me and will stand by me.” This shows how Paul
cares about them and how they are all going through the same thing with each
other. Paul also explains that they are nearer than lovers which must means that
are really close to each other. Another example was when Paul sat up and was
feeling alone until he realized that Kat there. “I sit up, I feel myself strangely
alone. It’s good Kat is there. He glazes thoughtfully at the front and says: “Mighty
fine fire-works if they weren’t so dangerous.”” This means that Paul feels more
comfortable since Kat is near him.
is a survival technique because you can always rely on each other and be there
for one another. An example is when Paul said “We sit opposite of one another,
Kat and I, two soldiers in shabby coats, cooking a goose in the middle of the
night. We don’t talk much, but I believe we have a more complete communion with
one another than even lovers here.” This shows that they are closer than lovers
especially since Kat is Paul’s best friend. They are truly friends. Another example
is “They are more than motherliness and more than fear; they are the strongest,
most comforting thing there is anywhere: they are the voices of my comrades.”
This shows that his comrades comfort him when he needs it. Paul’s friends also help
him keep his mind off the war and what is going on. Paul is saying that his comrades
are the strongest thing there is, and they are more than a mother which is
important to Paul. As more and more of Paul’s close friends start to die Paul starts
to change because he has no one to rely on.
think comradeship is more vital in a battlefield than it is in non-combat life
because in the battlefield you will need someone to comfort you with what is
going on. In the battlefield you experience more harsh conditions like watching
soldiers dying. I feel like you will need someone to help you through all the
hard things that are you experiencing.
